Safety is a strategy
The statistics about barn fires are terrifying to anyone who cares about animals. Since January, 2006 in the U.S. hundreds of thousands of farm animals have died in barn fires. The Pennsylvania Equine Foundation supports innovative programs that teach barn owners how to recognize and correct hazards in their barns.
Fuel crisis affects horses, too
The rising cost of gasoline--and its impact on the cost of grain, bedding and hay--is making it harder for many people to keep their horses. Rescue organizations are overwhelmed. Desperate owners are asking their veterinarians to euthanize otherwise healthy horses, just to save them from abandonment and starvation.
